YouTube Tests New Generative AI Features to Enhance Video Watching Experience

YouTube is experimenting with two new generative AI features, starting with a "Conversational" AI tool called "Ask" and a "Summarized Topics" feature, to provide users with an improved video-watching experience.

YouTube is rolling out experimental generative AI features aimed at enhancing the video-watching experience for users. The first feature, known as "Ask," introduces a conversational AI tool that allows users to ask questions about the video they are watching. The second feature, "Summarized Topics," leverages AI organization skills to categorize comments on long-form videos into easily digestible themes. These tests are part of YouTube's ongoing efforts to integrate generative AI and improve user engagement on the platform.

Here are the key features of the new generative AI tests on YouTube:

1. Conversational AI ("Ask"):

  • User Interaction: Users can now interact with a conversational AI tool by asking questions about the video they are currently watching on YouTube.
  • "Ask" Button: A starred "Ask" button appears beside the thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons on mobile devices, allowing users to tap and ask questions without interrupting their viewing experience.
  • Pre-made Prompts: Users can choose from pre-made prompts or write their own questions to prompt the AI to provide relevant information about the video content.
  • Placement: The AI responses appear beneath the video, ensuring a non-intrusive user experience.

2. Summarized Topics:

  • Comment Organization: The AI organizes comments on long-form videos into summarized topics, making it easier for users to navigate and engage in specific themes.
  • "Topics" Button: A starred "Topics" button is introduced in the comments section, allowing users to access organized themes quickly.
  • Creator Benefits: Creators can benefit from organized comment sections, enabling them to participate in conversations more efficiently and manage comments related to specific topics.
  • Content Moderation: Creators can remove inappropriate comments within specific topics, contributing to a cleaner and more constructive comment environment.

Both features are in the experimental phase, and YouTube emphasizes that users participating in the test should provide feedback to improve the functionality.

The "Ask" feature is currently rolling out to a small number of users, and YouTube Premium members on Android devices can opt into the test in the coming weeks.

The "Summarized Topics" feature is being tested on a small number of English videos with larger comment sections, and eligible users will see the "Topics" section on mobile.

YouTube's introduction of generative AI features like "Ask" and "Summarized Topics" reflects the platform's commitment to leveraging AI for an enhanced user experience. By incorporating conversational AI tools and organizing comments into themes, YouTube aims to make video interactions more engaging and manageable. As these features undergo testing, user feedback will play a crucial role in refining the AI functionality and addressing any potential issues.
